Meet the mind behind the mojo…
Lori Cox, MS, NASM-CPT, NASM WLS developed Lori Cox Fitness to help you build holistic sustainable health and wellness habits all while discovering your mojo. The key to the sustainability is to build a strong foundation of healthy lifestyle principles. The lifestyle principles that I and Lori Cox Fitness are devoted to are inclusive of nutrition, activity, ample rest and stress management.
For me, the journey to a healthy lifestyle eluded me for many years. As a child, I was never the “go-to” choice for any grade school gym classes…and most often, the last one chosen for dodge ball. Probably goes without saying that I wasn’t confident or interested in any team sports. While others played outside I came home from school and filled myself up with sugary snacks then tackled the homework. In high school and college, that similar lifestyle continued and I never developed the confidence to participate in any sport-my best attempt at any physical activity was my first semester at the University of Iowa. I enrolled in a canoeing class. The class took place along the Iowa River. I capsized in week one or week two…my instructor told me I was the first canoeing student to capsize during any class-EVER! That experience reinforced my belief that I was never going to succeed at any type of physical activity. I graduated from the University of Iowa with a BS in Psychology and then immediately entered Graduate School focused on completing a MS in Counseling Psychology. I tapped into my passion of service to others and I realized that in order to be my best to others I had to first be happy with myself. This is when my commitment to fitness became a true part of me and my fitness journey began.
Through my process of self-discovery in grad school, I found the confidence to step out of my comfort zone of studying, working & eating…to trying exercise and making better food choices. I began with swimming. I saw results. My eating habits changed. I saw results. Once graduated from school, I was successfully running my psychotherapy practice and I got side-tracked…the idea of real estate surfaced when I was confronted with a home buying decision and because I found less than stellar capabilities in the real estate professionals involved in my transaction and it was at that point, I decided to get my real estate license. I kept a small private psychotherapy practice on the side and began selling real estate full time transferring my counseling and listening skills into a sales environment. My core passion for helping others surfaced within the first year of selling real estate and I began coaching other real estate professionals on business and lifestyle changes. Over the past 30 years, I have sold real estate, managed real estate offices, contracted with the National Association of REALTORS on several projects and also completed higher education as a life coach with the purpose of partnering with others looking to grow their entrepreneurial businesses. All the while, recreational workouts were my key to managing stress.
In 2009, my husband Terry had an opportunity to relocate to Atlanta and our life took a twist. Although we moved to Atlanta, I remained 100% committed to my business that was grounded in the Chicagoland area. During this time, my workout routines suffered as they became sporadic, my stress became less manageable, and my commitment to exercise faded…I needed to re-group…kind of like hitting the “refresh” key on my laptop. We took a vacation in 2011, I spent reflective time…and I think in many ways, I began to realize my life was out of control. I was disconnected to what brought me any calm and peace…for the most part my life consisted of gathering frequent flyer miles and lots of chaos. And it was in 2011, as a result of that reflective time away from my business and life’s chaos that I discovered my “mojo”. I began exercising daily at home and when traveling, taking my exercise program with me. It was that commitment to my health and wellness that got me to where I am today. In April of 2013, as a result of being strong and better fit, I was confident and ready to ask a very difficult question of myself and Terry…was my Chicago business worth all the travel, stress and the depletion of energy? The scary and exciting answer was “no”.
And from that journey was born Lori Cox Fitness. I think it was always there…just somewhat elusive. What Lori Cox Fitness is about is sharing my passion with other women wanting to discover their “mojo”. Mojo is the energy we harness when we do something that’s purposeful, powerful, and positive and the rest of our world is attracted to it. Lori Cox Fitness is about just that…and how we can create mojo in our lives, maintain it, and recapture it when we lose it. ”. I’ve chosen to focus my passion and attention on women because I have found through my own experiences as a business and life coach that often women do not put themselves first and rarely have time to invest in their own health and wellness.
That journey to mojo health and wellness is about confidence, & empowerment. It’s about of making good choices about activity, nourishing our bodies with really good energy…not only in the food we eat, but the relationships we chose to have with ourselves and others. I am confident that with your commitment we can, harness your mojo and achieve remarkable outcomes!
